Our hair gets dirty. No, make that really dirty. Unless you’re living inside a room where everyone is required to get hosed down and air dried before they can enter, your hair is exposed to a lot of dirt. In fact, you don’t need to be exposed outside. You have to know that your hair produces oil naturally. Of course, this makes your hair oily, and no one wants oily hair.
Fortunately, most people know these things already. This is why they’re regularly washing their hair – maybe even too much. For fear of facing the world with oily and/or smelly hair, they wash their hair daily. The question is – is this a good idea? I guess the better question is…
How often should you wash your hair?
We here at Aza Salon get it why people are obsessed with washing their hair daily. Your hair is supposed to be your crowning glory, and a dirty and oily crown is something that’s not good to wear out in public. No one wants to be caught dead with dirty and oily hair. Can you imagine going out on a date with oily hair? Can you imagine giving a presentation with dirty strands? Can you imagine people taking a whiff of your smelly hair?
It seems that for most people, it’s more of a preventive measure. They don’t want these things to happen so in order to avoid them, they just wash their hair first thing in the morning. Heck, some people even wash their hair a second time before going to bed.
In addition, a lot of people do it daily because they want their hair to smell good. Frankly, it’s hard to blame them. If you’re going to insist on doing it daily for this purpose, make sure that you’re using a shampoo and conditioner that are designed for daily use.
Why It’s Not a Good Idea to Wash Your Hair Daily
You have to know that the strands of our hair are basically a fiber. Just like most fibers, it’s going to look worse the more you wash it.
Most hair experts, including the ones here at our salon, say that it’s not really needed to do it on a daily basis. You have to know that a lot of shampoos and conditioners out there in the market have detergents that can mess up your crown. This is because they’re not really designed for daily use. These products can make your hair dry.
So, How Often should You Wash Your Hair?
Unfortunately, there is really no straight answer for this question. This is because we have different hair types and situations. Here are some general things to consider:
- If you have long, thick and curly hair, you can go a few days in between washing. This is because it takes longer for the oil from the scalp to go down the entire length of the hair fibers. This means that the strands tend to be dry.
- The more processed your hair is, the less shampooing is required.
- For most people, shampooing every other day is more than enough.
- If you have really oily hair, then daily shampooing makes sense.
- If you notice that your hair gets dried out after shampooing, adjust your washing schedule by lengthening the days in between washing.
